After a lull in my ideas and enthusiasm to sit down and let the words flow, I read the new challenge for May and was immediately sat with a silly, happy smile on my face! Thanks to
and for continuing this experiment, it is great to see a community being built and supporting each other in this online ether. Why does this topic sing to me?
Well, if I start by sharing that at heart, I am a geeky scientist, that might begin to shed some light on my love of experiments. Science, testing the unknown and learning have been my motivations for a long, long time. At school, I found wonder in the chemistry experiments, the laws of physics and the magic of biology. Learning that not everything is known and we have more yet to discover… that was being given permission to explore and ask questions - something I just love to do. I pushed on to learn more and then to create my own hypotheses to test, and in some small, tiny way I contributed to the expansion of knowledge.
R&D, scientific discovery and communication are still a large part of my day-to-day life, and I am happy to see that curiosity and experimentation continue to advance our understanding of the world.
If food is the language of love…
Food, be it cooking or eating is another great passion of mine. I would consider myself an experimental cook, able to follow a recipe but happy to also come up with something from whatever I might have in the cupboards. I love to try new flavours and dishes from all over, when on my travels, in a new restaurant or just when I hear or see a new idea. Sometimes, the experiments don’t go to plan, but I enjoy the process of trying something out, and often coming up with something better than I expected!
Food can be a solo pursuit, but it can also bring people together, sharing simple bakes or a hearty dish that you spent hours preparing. Providing nourishment and breaking bread together is a rewarding experience and giving people you care about something that you made from scratch is a joy.
Creating for the love of it and nothing more
Experimenting with my writing has become a new area of exploration for me this year. I have never had much confidence in my words, be it what I say or what I write. I know that I struggle with grammar and although I love drama and performance, English literature and language were never subjects I felt I excelled at. I did not really read for pleasure as a child and then with studying, it was not something I wanted to spend more time doing. But over the last few years, I have picked up more books, begun to read for fun and now I have challenged myself to share my thoughts.
Anyone reading my posts will see that my mind wanders from one thing to the next, sometimes with a connecting thread or a tenuous link. The words flow as I let them, and on occasion some poem or imagery will come to mind to tie it all back.
I am doing this for me, but hopefully what I create is of interest or resonates with someone else out there. I do not profess to be a writer, but as I dabble and experiment in sharing my steam of consciousness I find I am enjoying it more and more.
Experimental
Frankenstein’s monster,
Jazz,
Interpretive dance…
Exploring something new,
To find answers,
Or to push boundaries.
For fun,
For advancement,
For knowledge.
Try something different,
Change up your routine,
See where it takes you.
I experimented with food today, I added chicken to a carbonara, it didn't go down well, I'm to make it the normal way next time, leave the chicken out! Other than that I'm not very adventurous with food, my family, me included, have quite a bland palate!
I like to think you can make quite a lot of life an experiment if you stay curious. Mind wandering writing is some of my favourite, when you start reading about one subject and end up going in a large convoluted circle and you're not sure what happened, other than you enjoyed it, are some of the best. I've tried to replicate it but in my own head it sounds like rambling so I don't know what it would be like for someone else!
Thanks for your entry Laura 😊
Arent’t all creative acts experiments I am a cook as well. I love this.
